HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (August 8, 2011) –Cristobal De Col (Peru), winner of the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship and Quiksilver Pro Team member, will compete in the Quiksilver Pro New York ASP World Tour Trials, presented by UnSound Surf, supported by vitaminwater, for a chance to surf against the world’s best during the WCT event.
“I could not be happier to hear the good news,” said the goofy footer from his home in Lima, after learning about his being selected for the trials. “It’s been an unbelievable year so far, and I’m anxious to get to New York and give it my best.”
At only 18 years old, De Col combines classic power surfing with a jaw-dropping aerial attack. He has had what many consider to be a breakthrough year in 2011, receiving large amounts of coverage both at home and abroad for his free surfing exploits, while also doing well on the competitive circuit.
“Cristobal is one of the most promising athletes to emerge from South America,” said Chad Wells, Quiksilver Surf Program Manager. “His Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship more than solidified that.”
Sixteen surfers, including De Col, will compete for the second and final wildcard into the main event. The first wildcard was awarded to Quiksilver team rider and New York local, Balaram Stack.
The Quiksilver Pro New York ASP World Tour Trials, presented by UnSound Surf, will be held between September 1-3 at the National Boulevard event site.
